A Hazon CSA
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, a cooperative agreement between a farmer(s) and a group of people who agree to pre-purchase a share of the farmer's produce for an entire season. The CSA gives members access to fresh, local, organic produce at competitive prices, while helping to preserve farmland and build community.
WHAT IS A HAZON CSA?
•Hazon is an organization dedicated to creating healthy and sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond.
•It provides a platform to engage the Jewish community and offer innovative educational and community-building programs around food and Jewish tradition.
OUR FARMERS Pre HaEmek is partnering with two Hudson Valley Farms - Great Song Farm in Red Hook and Lineage Farm in Hudson. Each week they will provide shareholders with about 7-10 different vegetables such as lettuce, arugula, turnips, kale, swiss chard, broccoli rabe, garlic scapes, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, summer squash, carrots, cucumbers, spinach, herbs, green beans, beets, endive, radishes, and brussel sprouts.
ABOUT PRI HAEMEK Pri HaEmek is Hebrew for Bounty of the Valley. It is a not-for-profit CSA that is about more than buying organic, local produce that tastes great. It is also about community, in particular the Jewish community of the Mid-Hudson Valley. The CSA is grounded in Jewish values concerning the environment, but is open to anyone. Throughout the year there will be programming around Jewish themes, especially around the Jewish holidays.
Being concerned about community, each year our CSA will grant some tzedakah shares provided through the membership fee and donations. Pri HaEmek is run by its shareholders. They participate in many ways to make this a successful CSA.
BECOMING A MEMBER To buy a share for the full season, the cost is $500 for the vegetable share and a minimum of $36 for the required membership fee. The season runs from the beginning of June through the beginning of November.
You can also become a member to support this effort for $36 even if you choose not to buy a share.
Distributions will be held at the Poughkeepsie JCC on Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. Days will change when Jewish holidays fall on Thursday.
Shareholders will be required to volunteer time by helping at the distribution or by serving in another capacity. The amount of time will be dependent on the number of shareholders.
